Kowhai Festival Movie Night

10. Kowhai Festival Movie Night

Friday 26 October 2018 – Shoesmith Domain

A Fistful of Dollars (M – Violence)

We’re proud to celebrate the 10th Kowhai Festival Movie Night, with the classic Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western ‘A Fistful of Money’. The movie – going along with this years ‘Wild West’ theme – starts just after 8pm while there will be some relaxing music and a coffee stall from 7pm. Families are welcome to bring their own picnic. As the ground might still be a bit damp it’s probably a good idea to bring a chair or some seating as well as some warm clothes.

‘A Fistful of Dollars’ has been released in 1964 and starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role. It initiated the popularity of the Spaghetti Western genre and was followed by ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ catapulting Eastwood into stardom. The film has been identified as an unofficial remake of the Akira Kurosawa film Yojimbo (1961).

It became the first film to exhibit Leone’s famously distinctive style of visual direction. This was influenced by both John Ford’s cinematic landscaping and the Japanese method of direction perfected by Akira Kurosawa. Leone wanted an operatic feel to his western, and so there are many examples of extreme close-ups on the faces of different characters, functioning like arias in a traditional opera. The rhythm, emotion, and communication within scenes can be attributed to Leone’s meticulous framing of his close-ups.

For the third time the Kowhai Festival Movie Night is sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson Warkworth and the Rodney Loical Board. The Warkworth based ‘The Travelling Cinema Company’ is again in charge of the show with the biggest outdoor screen in the country, which is 18m wide and 11m high. The company was established in 2003 and was the first big screen outdoor exhibitor in the country. www.travellingcinem.nz or like them on www.facebook.com/TravellingCinemaCo
